Dental Crowns Strengthen Damaged Teeth

Curious to know more about dental crowns?

Have your East Brunswick, NJ, family dentists Dr. Brian Kwiatkowski and Dr. Susie Megalla told you that you need a dental crown? Simply wondering why a dental crown is used so you know whether you might need one? This dental cap is amazingly versatile, offering both cosmetic and restorative benefits.

What is a dental crown?

This type of dental restoration, sometimes referred to as a cap, is shaped like a tooth and often made from porcelain or ceramic material because they best mimic the look of a natural tooth. A custom-made crown is made to fit over a damaged tooth to restore its function and appearance. The crown is fabricated to look like a natural tooth and is matched to the rest of your smile so you will have a uniform appearance.

What should I expect during the procedure?

We will first prepare the damaged tooth by removing any decay and making sure the tooth is ready for the crown. We will talk to you about the tooth prep process and discuss local anesthesia or the use of sedation dentistry if needed.

Once the tooth has been shaved down and prepared for the crown, the next step is to take impressions of the tooth. These impressions are then sent to a lab for fabrication. A temporary crown will be placed over the tooth to protect it while your permanent crown is being created. Once your permanent crown is finished, we will place it over the prepared tooth and cement it into place. It can take anywhere from 2-3 visits to get your new crown from your East Brunswick, NJ, dentists.

What are the benefits of a dental crown?

Dental crowns boast countless benefits for their wearers. They:

  • Improves the damaged tooth’s function
  • Restore full strength back into your smile to make chewing and eating easier
  • Provide a more esthetically pleasing smile
  • Boost self-confidence
  • Make you look younger
  • Protect and stabilize the damaged tooth
